Are there alternatives to bore holes?
Installing a rainwater harvesting system is an alternative. A rain water harvesting systems collects water from the roof and stores it in harvesting tanks. These tanks can be placed anywhere, even underground. A pump is then used distribute water from the tank to the irrigation system. There are disadvantages to this system however, you can't collect enough water to keep a system running throughout the summer months without having rain to top up the tank. The bigger the tank you invest in the more water you will be able to save up.
When is the best time to water my garden?
The best time is generally in the morning and evening, especially during summer. Watering in the evening has the advantage of keeping the soil damper for longer, this is because there is a lower risk of evaporation due to less sunlight.
The early morning is generally good because the light and warmth of day improve the absorption of nutritional elements in the soil.
Watering should be avoided during the hottest hours of the day such as midday, this is because the shock caused by the low temperature of the water can affect a plants health – not to mention most of the water will evaporate before it reaches the plants roots.
Should solenoid valves be left in their boxes during the winter months, or can they be taken out?
Valve boxes are in place to protect valves from cold harsh conditions. For extra piece of mind install a drainage valve at the end of the line, this will ensure that the circuit is completely empty.
What is water pressure and how do you measure it?
Imagine if all of the water was contained in the system was in the form of a column; the “weight” exerted at the base of the column would be the pressure.
Pressure is measured in BAR and can be defined as both “static” and “dynamic”. Dynamic pressure will always be lower than static pressure, this is due to the flow resistance caused by friction within the hose pipe: the longer and narrower the hose, the higher the flow resistance will be.
It is best to know the dynamic pressure of your water system, as you will need to know whether it is sufficient enough to ensure the proper operation of your watering system.
What is water flow and how can I measure it?
Water flow is the measurement of the quantity of water passing through a hose in a given amount of time; it can be measured in either litres per minute (l/m) or per hour (l/h).
Measuring the flow of your system is simple, all you need is a chronometer and a recipient tank with a known capacity. You can then measure the flow of water in l/m or l/h by timing how long the tank takes to fill up and doing a simple calculation. For example a 10 litre tank filling up in 5 seconds would be 2 l/s or 120 l/m.
What is the best way to water flower beds, medium-sized plants and hedges?
We recommend that you use a dripper pipe or a micro-sprinkler system. When these are positioned near the plants on the ground it allows the system to directly water the roots without causing damage to the rest of the plant.
